World IN BRIEF : TAJIKISTAN : Russian Troops Hurt in Border Shelling
- Share via
Four border posts in southern Tajikistan were shelled from Afghan territory, Tajik officials said. Two soldiers of Russia’s 201st Motorized Rifle Division were wounded. It was the second attack from the Afghan side in 10 days and came during a buildup of Russian troops along the border. Tajik Radio quoted the Russian commander in the district, Lt. Col. Vasily Masiuk, as saying the shelling could be a prelude to another major incursion. Last week, 33 Russian and Tajik soldiers died in one of the bloodiest border attacks since civil war broke out last year in Tajikistan, an impoverished former Soviet republic in Central Asia.
