American Telephone & Telegraph Co. reported a 9% second-quarter profit gain Thursday and also announced top executive changes to give the long-distance company a sharper focus on overseas and multimedia businesses.

AT&T; hired former Wang Laboratories Chief Executive Richard W. Miller as chief financial officer, and AT&T; Chairman Robert Allen also reordered the duties of the company’s top operating officers.

The company reported earning $1.04 billion, or 77 cents per share, in the three months ended June 30. AT&T; earned $961 million, or 72 cents per share, in the same period a year ago. Revenue was $16.3 billion, up 3% from $15.8 billion a year ago.
