Four choral groups are scheduled to sing this weekend at the Torrance Song Festival, an event that will culminate when the groups join to form a 200-voice choir.

The festival, Saturday night at Torrance’s James Armstrong Theatre, will feature The Torrance Civic Chorale, Ellis-Orpheus Men’s Chorus, Kaleidoscope and L.A. Vocal Core. The groups will perform individually and then join forces to sing two numbers at the end of the 1 1/2-hour program, which includes music ranging from “Beauty and the Beast” to “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

Organizers of the festival, the first of its kind in Torrance, hope the event will evolve into Southern California’s first international festival for community singing groups. The Torrance Civic Chorale last year took part in one such gathering in Coventry, England: the International Church Music Festival.

David Burks, the chorale’s director, said that if the Torrance festival goes international, it will not lack participants.

“There are choirs out there from Mexico, Central and South America, Japan and Germany that have expressed interest in coming to Southern California,” Burks said. “We’d like to be the host of that.”
