Conservative ‘Vocal Minority’

In response to “Survey Cites Conservative ‘Vocal Minority,’ ” July 16:

Having been around more years than most people, and in this area for some 15, I sincerely wish that in addition to the interesting information supplied by your report you would have described just how the Times Mirror Center for the People and the Press goes about selecting those to be interviewed. Over the years I have served on four different juries but never participated in any of The Times’ findings. All that comes to me in the mail are questionnaires from various special interest groups, also wanting money.

Your article indicates to me that educated people are those more likely to have opinions about issues of the day. With perhaps certain exceptions like entertainers, film industry people and those belonging to odd fringe groups, educated people have for some years been more likely to vote for Republicans. Personally, I am entertained by Rush Limbaugh, usually disagree with his points and get turned off when he harps too long on the same point.

A Republican, I voted for President Clinton, support him and feel he has (and should have) a whole four years to do something for the United States. To me, Presidents Reagan and Bush were absolute disasters for the country, for which our children and grandchildren will pay. Both our new senators were supported by me. They have one term to do well for us all; I write to them. If this seems to “distort and exaggerate,” so be it.

I deeply resent The Times’ “survey” referring to taxpayers who happen to care about the future of this country as a “vocal minority.” It is clearly an attempt by the liberal press to discredit the voices of those people who openly oppose Clinton’s tax-and-spend plans. We are not a vocal minority. We are the informed majority who take the time to study the issues and express our positions to our elected representatives.

I think the article is the biggest bunch of hogwash I’ve ever read.

This is the kind of “article” that is not news, but pure political rhetoric. As a subscriber, I would rather read news. Please leave Rush Limbaugh alone with his multiple millions of listeners. It should be obvious that his kind of “minority” will be heard from, loud and clear, in the elections of 1994 and 1996. Now, please, back to the news.
