COSTA MESA : City Seeks Applicants to Planning Panel

Moving to fill the vacancy on the Planning Commission created by the death of longtime member Clarence (Chick) Clarke, the City Council this week voted to begin soliciting applications from residents interested in filling the post.

In a 4-1 vote, with Councilwoman Mary Hornbuckle casting the dissenting vote, the council Monday night ordered the staff to send out announcements.

“I have a number of requests from a number of people who would like this position,” Councilman Jay Humphrey said. “I would like to see us move as quickly as possible.”

About 15 potential candidates signed up in February when a recruitment drive was held for several city commissions. However, the council’s action this week opens up the field to any resident wanting to serve on the Planning Commission.

The spot could also be filled by a member of the Transportation Commission. A report is being compiled to determine whether the Transportation Commission’s functions could be consolidated with other committees. If accepted, the council could vote to abolish the Transportation Commission and appoint one of its members to the Planning Commission.

Hornbuckle asked that the council wait until the report detailing the potential consolidation is completed before any action is taken.

Clarke, who served on the Planning Commission for 23 years, died June 21.
