U.S. Rep. Ron Packard was released from a Maryland hospital Thursday, six days after undergoing triple bypass heart surgery to remove arterial blockages, his staff said.

The Republican lawmaker, whose district includes southern Orange County, has been up and walking since Tuesday and is expected to resume a full work schedule after Congress’ Labor Day recess, his aides said.

He will recuperate at his Virginia home over the next few weeks. His doctor has placed him on a low-cholesterol diet, his office said.

A team of three surgeons performed the operation Friday at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland after discovering the blockage.
