Grisel Arguello, the 10-year-old Lynwood girl who was shot in the head by gang members last week as she and her mother walked down a neighborhood street, died Saturday afternoon.

The girl fell into a coma hours after the shooting Tuesday and was hooked up to a life-support system until she died Saturday afternoon at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, hospital officials said.

Grisel and her mother, Guadalupe, were walking to a relative’s house a block way from their home when two young men on bicycles each fired about four shots at rival gang members hanging out on the sidewalk near Orchard and Oak avenues, police said. A stray bullet struck Grisel. No one else was injured.

Grisel’s shooting has shaken residents in her neighborhood, which is plagued by gun battles between gangs.

“After a while you just get used to (the gunfire), but knowing that it was a little girl who was shot is really bad,” said Victor Aguilar, 18, who lives a few blocks from where Grisel was shot.

Guadalupe Arguello had just moved her family to a house near the Lynwood-Compton border last month. She had hoped to escape the constant gunfire from rivaling gangs in her former Lynwood neighborhood, where Grisel had often been frightened. But Guadalupe Arguello still could not protect her daughter from the violence.

Neither Guadalupe Arguello or members of her family could be reached for comment Saturday.

A 16-year-old Lynwood youth and Frank Miller, 21, of Compton were arrested on suspicion of murder, sheriff’s deputies said.

The teen-ager, whose name is being withheld because of his age, is being held at Los Padrinos Juvenile Facility in Downey and is scheduled for arraignment Monday. Miller is being held without bail at the Men’s Central Jail. He is scheduled for arraignment in Municipal Court in Compton on Tuesday.

Sheriff’s deputies have set up a fund to pay for Grisel’s funeral expenses. Donations can be sent to the Grisel Arguello Fund c/o the Sheriff’s Relief Foundation, 11515 S. Colima Road, Whittier 90604.
