DUBIOUS DISTINCTION: A milestone of sorts was reached with the declaration by Transamerica Insurance Group that it is moving 1,000 Woodland Hills jobs to Texas. . . . That puts the number of local jobs lost at 10,000 since 1990. During that time, the Valley has gained only 1,500 new jobs. About 2,000 jobs have been lost just since January. See Valley Business, page 4.

STAYIN’ ALIVE: On the other hand, here’s a story of a high-tech business that retooled and came up smiles. . . . New Image Industries, based in Canoga Park, lost $12 million selling video systems to beauty salons for customers to preview new hairdos. Now it’s making money in high-tech gadgets for dentists. See Valley Business, page 8.

RACING DEATH: Police say they don’t have the resources to control the drag-racing that takes place on the remote streets of Sylmar--racing that once again has led to tragedy. A car carrying a family of four was rear-ended Sunday by a teen-ager speeding to a race site on San Fernando Road (B1). . . . “We are not talking about four or five cars,” says Capt. Tim McBride, Foothill Division commander, above. “We are talking about hundreds of kids going out there.”

ONE MAN’S STORY: Rich Tosches, a 16-year Valley resident, is rethinking his recent move to Colorado Springs. It’s hard, he says, getting used to having to contend with deer stomping all over the lawn, people routinely using their turn signals, and neighbors chirping “Good morning” every darn time they see you (E1).

ALMOST PERFECT: Ania Bleszynski knew it couldn’t last. Entered in three tennis events--singles, doubles and mixed doubles--she had gone unbeaten five times at the U. S. Olympic Festival in San Antonio. But the Harvard-Westlake senior’s forehand deserted her Monday, and she lost two matches. . . . Despite 90-degree temperatures each day, Bleszynski refused to blame the weather (C4).
