SHOPPING: Shopping center construction has slumped in the L. A. area in recent years (above). But the Valley’s love affair with malls continues. . . . Valley shoppers generally spend more time--and money--in malls than shoppers elsewhere. See Valley Briefing (B4).

WAY COOL: Get the feeling you’re waking up in the wrong place? A cool, cloudy July in the Valley? Shouldn’t it be 110, with cars overheating and the grass seared brown? Researchers say the “June Gloom” of coastal clouds has lingered, holding temperatures 10 degrees below normal (B1). . . . The cause appears to be a jet stream change, also blamed for the Midwest’s floods . . . Silver lining: No smog.

McFOOD FOR THOUGHT: It’s no blockbuster revelation to many parents, but California children don’t eat right. State officials have launched a campaign to get them to change their ways, saying most don’t eat the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables each day--and don’t think they need to (B1). . . . . The goal is children who will say: “I don’t want the hamburger, I want the salad.”

ROARING SUBTITLES: “Come see the dinosaurs roar!” says the flyer advertising showings of “Jurassic Park” for the hearing-impaired Thursday and Saturday in Glendale. The film will have subtitles by Tripod Captioned Films of Burbank (F3) . . . Screenings of Tripod’s captioned movies, which began as occasional fund-raising events, now draw audiences from throughout the L. A. area.

FLIP SIDE: Sports stars sometimes end up in show-biz but Carmit Bachar has a foot in both fields now. The 19-year-old from Encino competes tonight in the rhythmic gymnastics finals at the U. S. Olympic Festival in San Antonio (C1). . . . But his top priority is dancing, says Bachar, who has danced on the Academy Awards show and in movies. “That is where my career is going.”
