Microsoft Corp. said its profit for the fourth fiscal quarter jumped 26% as sales topped $1 billion for the first time.

Net income was $265 million, or 87 cents a share, for the three months that ended June 30. A year ago, Microsoft earned $210 million, or 71 cents a share, in the same period. Revenue was $1.04 billion, up 27% from $815 million a year ago.

Bill Gates, Microsoft chairman and founder, credited the performance to continued strong sales of the company’s Windows operating system, which employs graphic symbols to help users run programs on personal computers.
