LINE CROSSING: Less than a month after taking office, Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan is doing a little junketing in Orange County. He’s scheduled to be the official starter today for the Race Across America bicycle competition. . . . It leaves the Holiday Inn Irvine at 11 a.m., and the 27 cyclists are expected to reach Savannah, Ga., in about eight days. Riordan, a bike enthusiast, has a special reason to help: His son-in-law is crew captain for one of the cyclists.

STAR GAZING: When the Five Feet Too restaurant closes Saturday night (D6), Orange County will lose not only one of its more elegant eateries, but something of a celebrity hangout as well. Owner and chef Michael Kang says that actress Julie Andrews and her husband, director Blake Edwards, were once regulars at the Fashion Island Newport Beach restaurant. And former Rams coach John Robinson “used to come before the game until the Rams fired him.” Kang “hasn’t seen him since.”

REASON TO PARTY: Tia Carrere’s film career could well reach a new level after a major role in “Rising Sun,” which opens today. . . . So how should the 25-year-old actress (“Wayne’s World”) celebrate? She’ll be dining and dancing tonight at the Roxbury South at 2 Hutton Centre in Santa Ana. Joining her will be co-stars Wesley Snipes and Harvey Keitel. Plus Carrere’s husband, of course, Roxbury co-owner Elie Samaha. Unfortunately for Roxbury’s, Sean Connery can’t make it.

HEY, MR. POSTMAN: Another celebrity here today: John Ratzenberger--Cliff Clavin on TV’s “Cheers”--will present training graduation awards to a group with disabilities at microcomputer distributor Ingram Micro Inc. in Santa Ana. The workers were trained to operate a packaging machine that uses recycled paper. . . . Ratzenberger, an active environmentalist, has long had another job besides sitting on a bar stool next to George Wendt. He’s an executive with Ranpak Corp., which makes the machine.
