WORLD IN BRIEF : INDIA : 37 Killed in Clashes in Restive Kashmir

At least 37 people, most of them civilians, were killed in fighting between pro-independence Muslim guerrillas and government troops in a resurgence of violence across Jammu and Kashmir state, officials said. Government troops have been battling guerrillas in Kashmir for three years. It is the only Muslim-majority state in India, where 82% of the 875 million population is Hindu.
