CAMARILLO : City May Condemn Sites to Widen Road

Determined not to let property owners interfere with the widening of Las Posas Road, the Camarillo City Council will begin condemnation proceedings if it is unable to negotiate a purchase on two lots along the thoroughfare.

The council voted 4 to 0 Wednesday to authorize staff members to seek a court order condemning portions of two lots on a small section of Las Posas, between Anacapa Drive and Mission Road, if the city’s negotiations to buy the land are unsuccessful.

“This has been one of my priorities for many years,” Mayor Charlotte Craven said of the project, which will widen the street and install sidewalks on the north side of Las Posas Road.

Of the eight property owners along the stretch that is to be widened, six have agreed to sell the city portions of properties that front the street.

But two property owners have resisted the city’s offers: Luis C. Perez, who owns a rental house on the 1900 block and the Trinidad and Lin families who jointly own a lot on the 1700 block of the street.

Perez has told council members that losing the front portion of his lot would drive down his property’s value.
