Long Beach : New Substation to Be Base for 125 Police Officers
As part of a plan to deploy officers from stations throughout the city, officials agreed this week to lease a building for police in east Long Beach.
The City Council voted Tuesday to approve a 10-year lease with the Automobile Club of Southern California for its former offices at 4800 Los Coyotes Diagonal. By November, police will use the facility’s 7,000 square feet to deploy at least 125 officers.
Until recently, all officers were deployed from the department’s downtown station. Earlier this year, however, about 75 officers were assigned to a substation in Scherer Park in North Long Beach.
Police administrators have said deploying officers from stations throughout Long Beach will reduce officers’ commuting time and bolster the department’s community-based policing program.
Councilman Ray Grabinski said negotiations are under way for a station in west side of the city.
The building on Los Coyotes Diagonal will cost $6,302 a month with incremental increases over 10 years to $7,702 per month, according to a report by Police Chief William C. Ellis. The city has an option to buy the property in the first four years of the lease.
