* In response to the interview with C. Lani Guinier, Commentary, July 27:
C. Lani Guinier’s reasoning is indeed strange. She complains that the majority of the Supreme Court “ . . . is more worried about its commitment to a colorblind society than it is about remedying the reality of racially divided politics.” For Pete’s sake, if society were colorblind, there would be no such “reality”! Her approach of gerrymandering House districts, and determining the results “by feel,” is simply racism in a form of reparation.
Thanks, but I’ll go with the court.

* Thank you for printing the interview of C. Lani Guinier by Gayle Pollard Terry. Guinier’s responses were thoughtful, stimulating and articulate. What a shame she never had a chance to more fully present and argue those views. Whatever the outcome of the confirmation process, we all would have benefited from a healthy dialogue.
