Pop Album Chart : A Smashing Start for Pumpkins

Share

Cypress Hill’s “Black Sunday” doesn’t look like a flash in the pan as it holds down the top spot again, making it No. 1 for both its weeks on the pop chart. Skeptics guessed it might plummet after the hard-core fans bought it during its first week out. But there seems to be more Cypress Hill fans than anyone figured. There seem to be fewer Bell Biv DeVoe fans than anyone figured. The trio’s “Hootie Mack,” expected to be one of the summer’s big albums, continues its startling decline, dropping to No. 95. Speaking of stiffs, Billy Idol’s new “Cyperpunk” is even worse, toppling way out of the Top 100--to No. 154. Smashing Pumpkins’ “Siamese Dream,” the Chicago alternative band’s second album, is off to a smashing start, debuting at No. 10.

* The Atlanta duo’s new rap album, propelled by the title song (one of the year’s biggest singles), jumped from No. 68 to No. 45 in its second week on the chart.
