National Education Corp. Suffers Quarterly Loss
IRVINE — National Education Corp. posted a second-quarter loss of $3.5 million, or 12 cents a share, contrasted with a profit of $270,000, or 1 cent a share, for the same period a year earlier. Revenue declined 2% to $89.2 million from $91.4 million.
For the first six months of 1993, the company reported a loss of $7.9 million, or 26 cents a share, compared to a loss of $2.4 million, or 8 cents a share, for the 1992 period. Six-month revenue was down 4% to $172.2 million from $178.7 million.
The company said that underperformance in its training and vocational school operations offset gains in its publishing and independent study businesses.
The company also said that its Education Centers subsidiary has experienced lower enrollments because of economic conditions in certain markets and more restrictive admissions standards designed to improve student default rates.
