LA CRESCENTA : Outage Affects 10,000 Customers

Utility workers were investigating the cause of a power outage that affected more than 10,000 customers late Wednesday and early Thursday in La Crescenta, Montrose and La Canada-Flintridge.

The blackout was reported at 11:34 p.m. Wednesday, said Southern California Edison Co. spokeswoman Josephine Piantedosi. All power was restored to 10,342 customers by 12:47 a.m. Thursday.

“It’s most likely equipment failure,” Piantedosi said. “It probably had nothing to do with the heat.”

Edison officials said that on Thursday a crew replaced a transformer at a substation in La Canada-Flintridge. Workers will check to see what caused the short-circuiting.

No major problems were reported to the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station in La Crescenta during the more than one-hour outage, Lt. Jerry Carrigan said.

“We periodically have those out here maybe two or three times a year,” Carrigan said.

Although the summer has not been as hot as previous years, Edison officials said power use so far through June has remained the same compared with the same period last year, which may reflect the fact that the number of customers has grown by .4%.

The real gauge will be this month, usually considered the hottest period during the summer, officials said.
