A single engine Beechcraft Bonanza plane crashed on approach to the Big Bear City Airport in Big Bear Saturday afternoon, killing a woman passenger and critically injuring her husband, who was piloting the plane.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department in Big Bear would not release the names of the couple, the only people on board, or any other information as they investigated the crash.

The plane apparently hit a tree with its right wing then crashed into a utility pole before coming down and catching fire in the yard of a home in a residential area at Mountain View Drive and Gold Mountain, said Cpl. Gary Thielfoldt.

No one on the ground was injured.

The pilot was suffering from second- and third-degree burns, according to Big Bear paramedic Kelly Buckley, and was taken to San Bernardino County Medical Center.
