PERSONAL HEALTH : HEALTH WATCH : Vegetables: Our Allies in the War on Cancer

Share

Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. OK, not among the World’s 10 Most Beloved Vegetables, but according to the America Cancer Society they do have a purpose in life: You can cut your risks for cancer if you eat these cruciferous veggies.

Other food tips:

* Fruit can be your friend.

* Fats can be your enemy; go easy on oils and butter and choose low-fat dairy products, fish and lean cuts of meat.

* Up your fiber intake with roughage.

* Remember to take your vitamins, particularly A and C. But rather than settle for a little pill, try foods like tomatoes, carrots, peaches, citrus fruits, peppers and that ever-popular broccoli.

Guide to Infant Car Seats

More children in the United States are killed and crippled in automobile accidents than by any other cause. As a result, all 50 states require infants and children to travel buckled into car seats or safety belts.

How do you choose the right seat?

The decision can be as tough as selecting a new car. You want something that fits your child’s size and age, as well as one that conveniently fits in your car so you’ll use it all the time.

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ “Family Shopping Guide,” which lists models manufactured to comply with federal vehicle safety standards, includes car seats for infants and convertible and booster seats for older children.
