ABC School District : 2 Campuses Will Convert to Using Reclaimed Water

Share

School board members approved a plan this week to irrigate Artesia High and Palms Elementary School in Lakewood with reclaimed water.

Board members of the ABC Unified School District voted 7 to 0 Tuesday to approve the project with the Southern California Water Company. The water company will link the schools’ plumbing systems free of charge to water lines recently extended to a nearby park.

School officials said substituting reclaimed water for tap water at the two campuses will save the district $4,000 a year. Reclaimed water is partially treated waste water that can be used for irrigation but not for drinking. The schools will still use tap water for all sinks and drinking fountains.

The school district already irrigates 16 schools in Cerritos with reclaimed water and saved 116 million gallons of drinkable water and $30,000 in the 1991-92 school year, officials said.
