A surprising People’s choice: It isn’t every day that a salesman for an elevator company receives a fax from People magazine. Mickey Smith was so proud of the honor that he sent us a copy of the message, which said:
“We are running a story about you in the next issue of the magazine. We would very much like to interview and photograph you for the story. Do you have any interest in participating? Our deadline is approaching so please let us know ASAP.”
Smith felt uplifted until he noticed People had sent the fax to the wrong party. (“We got a bum number,” a magazine editor said.) The missive had actually been addressed to Heidi Fleiss, whoever she is.

This just in!People magazine says Fleiss hasn’t responded to requests for an interview. But Mickey Smith says he’s still willing to be interviewed. After all, he’s had plenty of ups and downs in his career.

Don’t call him tricky: George D. Crook of L.A. was one of the lawyers whose last name merited a Golden Moniker Award from California Lawyer magazine. In a subsequent letter to the editor, Crook declared: “I am not a Nixon.”

The day the running stopped: Yes, the 26th anniversary is coming up. As faithful fans of the TV series, “The Fugitive” know, it was on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 1967, that Dr. Richard Kimble proved his innocence (personally, we never doubted it).
How long ago was that? In that final episode, which played on cable the other day, Kimble’s sister tries to phone him in L.A. Her husband, consulting a telephone directory, informs her that the area code for all of L.A. is 213.
We were pleased to be reminded that the LAPD, which has taken its share of knocks lately, is the agency that arrests the dreaded one-armed man (before he flees on bail). That made up for the fact that the LAPD also bungled an opportunity to arrest Kimble in the old L.A. Produce Mart.

The day the booing started: Technology, of course, has made incredible advances since then. For example, Paul Trout went to attend a showing of the new movie, “The Fugitive,” in Hollywood and the film projector temporarily broke down. He said the spectators started to boo until “some guy with a guitar--I guess he’d brought it in--stepped up to the front and began to play some Rolling Stones tunes to the packed house.”
“Satisfaction” was no doubt one of them.
