A Close-Up Look At People Who Matter : City of Hope Groups’ Fund Raising Lauded

Three San Fernando Valley chapters of City of Hope have been honored with the organization’s Samuel H. Golter Award for extraordinary increases in fund raising over last year. Shirley and Max Newman accepted the award on behalf of the David Saul Heck chapter of City of Hope in Granada Hills, Harold Penner accepted for the Friends for Hope chapter in Encino, and David Rosen accepted for the World of Hope chapter in Encino, which increased fund raising 85%.

A field of 17 people from the San Fernando Valley who have been nominated to receive the 1993 Fernando Award will be narrowed to five finalists at the annual Jesse McHam Fernando Award Nomination Luncheon at noon on Friday at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills. The Fernando Award is given annually to a civic leader who has demonstrated an outstanding record of community service. This year’s 17 nominees are: Gilbert Benjamin, Tony Brafa, Bud Brown, James Elza Domine, Ron Feinstein, Ross B. Hopkins, Leo Maggio, Porfie Martinez, Guy Weddington McCreary, Frances Jean McIntosh, Robert M. Neiman, Clyde Porter, Lenore Ray, Janice Kaminer Reznik, Jerry Robertson, Robert M. Wilkinson and Terry York. The award will be given in November.

Two Chatsworth companies were honored recently as Employers of the Year for helping to provide employment opportunities to workers with developmental disabilities. The awards, given by Work Training Programs Inc. of Chatsworth, went to Magic World and Rockpoint Pet and Equestrian Supplies. Work Training Programs contracts with employers and provides supported employment services to people with developmental disabilities who might otherwise be left out of the work force.

Valley teen-ager Stacy Reznikoff of Encino was honored recently with the President’s Youth Service Award by the Jewish Teen Connection of Jewish Community Centers Assn. in West Hills for exemplary community service and volunteerism.

Two private pilots from the Valley have received $1,000 scholarships from the San Fernando Valley chapter of the Ninety-Nines Inc., an international organization of women pilots. Diana Dana of North Hollywood, who works as a flight attendant for an airline at Van Nuys Airport, and Herman Posada of Burbank, a fueler and manager at a Van Nuys aviation company, will both use the awards to help fund their continuing pilot training.

Six students from throughout the Valley participated in the second annual U. S.-Mexico Youth Leadership Encounter, held in Washington, D.C. July 3 to 11. Mayra Ariza, Francisco Martinez and Christina Mendoza, all sophomores at Sylmar High; Devra Dominguez, a sophomore at Cleveland High in Reseda; Davina Dominguez, a junior at Cleveland, and Cristina Guzman, a freshman at Cal State Northridge, all participated in the program, which was sponsored by the Future Leaders of America.

St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank recently honored Lynn Balzer, a nurse, with its Mission Spirit Award for the month of July for exhibiting exceptional caring and compassion for both patients and co-workers.

Nancy Ipsen of Valencia, a student at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, has received the June Miller Scholarship from the National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles. Ipsen will use the $500 award to continue her nursing education.

The Rotary Club of Van Nuys has elected David S. Honda as its 68th president for the 1993-94 club year. Honda joins Rotary officers Jeff Bills, Paul Davis, Jon Hecox, Ken Benson and Ken Worthen.

Suzanne Morrison of Granada Hills, a student at Woodbury University in Burbank, recently won the Rags to Riches Award for clothing she designed for the school’s annual fashion show.
