Cancer Program Wins Big: $10,000 Take at Race Day

The Gilda Radner Ovarian Cancer Detection Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center raised $10,000 for research and treatment at its July 18 “A Day at the Races” at Hollywood Park. Helping Hand Auxiliary sponsored the event. Wendy Crystal and Wendy Platt co-chaired.

American Oceans Campaign received $25,000, proceeds of the Honda del Sol Pro/Celebrity Volleyball Challenge July 10 at Santa Monica Beach. Sponsors included Loew’s Santa Monica Beach Hotel, Visa, KIIS-FM, Creative Computers and others. Among celebrity players were Brian Lewis, Nicolette Sheridan, Tori Spelling and Daphne Zuniga.

Friends of the Wellness Community netted $27,000 at the July 21 benefit performance of “The Will Rogers Follies” at the Pantages Theater. Proceeds will be used for free support programs for cancer patients and the Teens Wellness Program. Tommie Shulman is president. Linda Stein was event chair.

Golden State Minority Foundation awarded 26 college and university students scholarships totaling $75,000 at its 19th annual “Salute to Minority Education” dinner at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on June 10. The event raised $140,000 for future scholarships. Supporters included Anheuser Busch, First Interstate Bank Foundation, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, Sumitomo Bank of California, Riordan Foundation, Wilfandel Club, KCBS-TV, Adolph Coors Co., Pacific Bell and Food 4 Less.

Childrens Hospital Los Angeles netted $7,000 at a June 5 carousel benefit at the Santa Monica Pier. The event was hosted by This Little Light, a group of young professional men and women who help support the hospital. Proceeds will benefit the hospital’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit.

American Foundation for AIDS Research received a $200,000 check from KTWV-FM radio, proceeds of “Wave AID 6” compact disc and cassette sales. The check was presented to AmFAR president Dr. Mervyn Silverman at a June 19 reception at the Greek Theatre.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital raised $43,000 at the June 26 celebrity “Fun Shoot” held at the Moore-N-Moore Sporting Clays facility in San Fernando. Celebrity players included Robert Stack, Eric Estrada, Jameson Parker and Darlene Carr.

AIDS Project Los Angeles received more than $20,000 raised June 19 at a Celebrity Pool Tournament featuring Stephen Baldwin, Luke Perry, Dana Ashbrook, Sara Gilbert, Marlee Matlin and other actors. Proceeds will be used for APLA’s free services to people with the HIV virus and AIDS in Los Angeles County.
