Bob Dole and GOP

* I felt a strange sense of frustration as I watched the bickering about the budget plan on Capitol Hill. Shame on the Republicans for voting in block against the budget. If not this plan, what plan do they propose? All I heard were complaints about the taxes. And shame on those Democrats holding out for their piece of the pie.

If President Clinton was really so smart, he would have asked the American people to call their tax accountant before calling their congressman. That way, well over nine out of 10 of them, including small businessmen, would have found out that their income taxes wouldn’t go up one red cent under his budget plan--and in some cases might even go down. They would have also discovered who had been trying to con them into believing otherwise.

But give Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) credit. He got millions of ordinary, middle-class folks angrily calling their representatives, protesting taxes only the rich had to pay. Pretty noble, isn’t it? Back in the 1980s when the middle class saw their taxes go up, I wonder how many rich folks called anyone to complain.

Sen. Dole-Ful would better serve his constituents if he would think and act in terms of what’s good for the nation rather than concentrating his venom on what’s bad for the President.

A more fitting name for the Republican Party is the Obstructionist Party.
