LONG BEACH : Officer Shot in Head Shows Improvement

Share

A Long Beach police officer who was shot in the head showed signs of improvement Thursday, although he remained in critical condition, according to his doctor.

Abel Dominguez, 31, opened his eyes and was able to follow simple commands at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, said his neurosurgeon, Dr. Barry Ceverha. Dominguez blinked whenever a hand came near his eyes and followed the doctor’s command to squeeze his hand.

“It means to me that there’s higher brain function,” Ceverha said. Although Ceverha called the officer’s prognosis uncertain, he said the father of three has responded remarkably well to treatment.

“When he was brought in last Friday, frankly, I thought he had suffered a fatal injury. Nothing surprises me about him anymore.”

Dominguez was sitting in his patrol car when a gunman walked up and opened fire. Two men were charged with attempted murder.
