Auto Sales Show Modest Growth in Early August: The figures for domestic cars backed off from their recent surge, rising just 3.6% from the weak business of a year earlier. Analysts said the slowdown reflects depleted inventories and a possible return of consumer caution. Auto makers said domestic car sales rose 2.7%, while light-truck sales increased 4.7% compared to the Aug. 1-10 period a year ago.
