World IN BRIEF : EGYPT : Muslim Militants Charged in Plot

A military court charged 53 Muslim militants, including three from the army, with plotting to overthrow the government in the first case against army personnel since the 1981 murder of President Anwar Sadat. The trial began a day after a civil court acquitted 24 Muslim extremists in another murder case. The military prosecutor, Brig. Gen. Wagdi Laithi, accused the 53 militants, seven of whom are at large, of forming an illegal group, plotting to overthrow the government and assassinate public figures and possessing arms and leaflets inciting hatred against the government.
