Philippine Mayor Charged in Death of ‘Gift’ Student

MANILA —
The mayor of a Philippine town and six of his aides were charged Monday with raping and killing a student they allegedly gave him as “a gift.”
Prosecutors said 20-year-old Eileen Sarmenta, a student at the state-run University of the Philippines, was killed in June after she and a male friend were abducted by aides to Mayor Antonio Sanchez of Calauan, south of Manila.
