TEL AVIV : Stay or Go?
John Demjanjuk, acquitted last month on charges of being the sadistic Nazi death camp guard “Ivan the Terrible,” is expected to learn Wednesday whether he will be deported from Israel.
His deportation, originally scheduled for Aug. 1, was delayed by petitions asking the Supreme Court to order him tried on other war-crimes charges. Legal experts said the court is likely to go along with the attorney general, who urged deportation.
Demjanjuk, 73, was stripped of his U.S. citizenship in 1981 for lying about his alleged Nazi past. His family and Rep. James Traficant (D-Ohio) are trying to secure a temporary visa for him so he can return to the United States pending new hearings on his status.
