Duarte : Youth Center Subsidy OKd

Share

While many cities are cutting back on recreation programs, Duarte will spend about $220,000 over the next two years to subsidize a new YMCA facility for youths.

The 3,500-square-foot youth center opened July 27 at 1345 Huntington Drive in the Pic ‘N’ Save center. It will cost the city $50,000 a year in operating expenses and another $60,000 in rent, according to Manuel Ontal Jr., assistant to the city manager.

The city will pick up the tab for two years, but it is unclear whether it will be able to subsidize the center after that.

The city used about $70,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant money to buy equipment and renovate the storefront that houses the Duarte YMCA Youth Center. The center is a satellite of the Monrovia YMCA, and its members do not have to live in Duarte.
