Spencer-Marquez Gets CSUN Coaching Post

Pam Spencer-Marquez, a three-time Olympian in the women’s high jump and the Cal State Northridge record-holder in the event, has been hired as an assistant track coach at her alma mater. She will coach the men and women high jumpers.

Spencer-Marquez, 35, was a member of the United States Olympic teams in 1976-’80-’84, and she won four national titles between 1980 and ’84.

Coach’s name--The name of a Cal State Northridge assistant football coach was misspelled in Wednesday’s edition. The coach’s name is Lance Mocny.

She set two national records in 1981, topped by a personal best of 6 feet 5 1/2 inches to win the Van Damme Memorial in Brussels.

“We are very pleased to be able to add someone of Pam’s caliber to our staff,” Northridge Coach Don Strametz said. “She’s very well known and respected as a high jump expert across the nation and in Southern California. Her presence here should help us immensely in recruiting top high jumpers.”

Spencer-Marquez was the girls’ track coach at Alemany High in 1992 and ’93 after being an assistant at the Mission Hills school from 1987-91.

She has also served as an assistant coach at the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1991 and as a manager on the U.S. team that competed in the IAAF World Cup last year.

Golf

David Berganio Jr. of Sylmar shot a one-under-par 70 in the first round of the 93rd U.S. Amateur in Houston and trails leader Raymond Russell of Scotland (67) by three strokes.

Other first-round scores include: Jason Gore (71) of Valencia, Corbett Segal (75) of Burbank, Charlie Wi (76) of Thousand Oaks, Mitch Voges (78) of Simi Valley and David Saylor (79) of West Hills.

Scott Golditch of Northridge, a Taft High senior, shot a six-over 77 and is six shots off the lead after one round of the American Junior Golf Assn. Junior Championship at Woodway Country Club in Darien, Conn. Art Weiner, another Taft senior, shot an 80 in the first round.

Cycling

Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys and John Wordin of West Hills, members of the Miller Lite Cycling Team, recorded strong performances in the La Mirada Grand Prix.

Rogers finished second and Wordin placed 14th over the 60-mile course.

Football

Lance Moony has been hired as an assistant coach for Cal State Northridge. Moony, 32, who has coached only at the high school level for three years, will handle the inside linebackers. Moony played for Southwest Texas State in 1983.

Basketball

Funeral services for former Bell-Jeff High boys’ Coach Joe Dunn are scheduled for today at 1 p.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Burbank.

Dunn, 54, died Saturday after a lengthy battle with spinal neuromuscular atrophy. Internment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in Glendale.

Track and Field

Konya Hubbard, the 1993 City Section champion in the girls’ high jump from San Fernando High, will attend Wilberforce (Ohio) University.

Softball

The state champion California Raiders, a 16-and-under girls’ team with several players from the Santa Clarita and San Fernando valleys and Ventura region, finished third among 73 teams in the Amateur Softball Assn. Junior Olympic National Tournament.

Miscellany

Holly Ludwig, a former cross-country and track athlete at Antelope Valley College, is one of 18 recipients of the California Community Colleges Scholar-Athlete Award for the 1992-93 school year.

Ojai residents Dave Ford (15-17) and Don Beach (45-54) placed first in their respective age classes in the World Bodysurfing Championships on Sunday in Oceanside.
