BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Both Leagues Hand Out Suspensions

Pitchers Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets and Bob Walk of Pittsburgh and Pirate Manager Jim Leyland were suspended Friday by the National League for incidents involving hit batsmen.

Gooden was suspended for five games for hitting Cincinnati’s Brian Koelling last Monday at Shea Stadium. Gooden and Walk, suspended for five games for hitting the Dodgers’ Kevin Gross on Tuesday night, have appealed and will remain active.

Leyland’s six-game suspension began Friday night. He will be eligible to return to the dugout next Thursday.

Gooden, Walk and Leyland also were fined an undisclosed amount.

Managers Tony La Russa of Oakland and Phil Garner of Milwaukee and five others were suspended by the American League for involvement in a bench-clearing brawl on Tuesday.

The managers were given five-game suspensions, and Athletic pitcher Edwin Nunez was set down for 10 days. Also suspended were Oakland coach Tommie Reynolds (five games) and Oakland designated hitter Troy Neel (four games). The suspensions for all but Neel will begin today pending appeals. Neel’s suspension will start Monday.

Given three-game suspensions were Mark McGwire of the Athletics and Graeme Lloyd of the Brewers. Both are on the disabled list.
