WASHINGTON : Peace Breaking Out?
The Arab-Israeli peace talks resume today with the expectation that Israel and the Palestinians will sign a “declaration of principles” that provides for Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and Palestinian self-government on the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
Reached in a series of secret meetings between Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and senior officials of the Palestine Liberation Organization, the agreement would break the long stalemate in the peace talks.
It could also lead to further agreements with Syria, Jordan and Lebanon in the Washington talks.
Israeli and Palestinian negotiators must still work out detailed plans to implement the agreement. However, the next big step may be a mutual recognition pact between Israel and the PLO.
