A mayoral endorsement of butt bongo?KLSX, the radio station that features controversial shock jock Howard Stern, is running this promo: “This is Richard Riordan, mayor of a classic town. You’re listening to 97.1 KLSX, the classic rock station.”

Is the mayor, by any chance, a big fan of Stern, who has been fined numerous times for obscene language and off-color stunts, such as spanking bare rumps?

“My suspicion is he’s a Stern fan, but he didn’t say,” said Ron Lipkin, the station’s production director.

“No, he’s not,” asserted mayoral spokesman Tom Kruzepan. “He doesn’t endorse any radio personalities. What happened was he was interviewed (by the station) a month ago and they must have asked him to do a little spot. Actually, I think it’s Larry Green who’s a big fan of Stern.”

Melrose Larry, also a politician, hasn’t been asked to tape any KLSX promos, perhaps because he finished 16th in the mayoral primary.

Phantom of the overlap: Channel 11 news led with a bulletin that U.S. troops were raiding sites in Mogadishu the other night, but instead of seeing film of the event, viewers heard loud cheering and whoops. It turned out the sound was for the subsequent story--about the last local performance of “Phantom of the Opera.”

Clean wrong: Lois Drake of the Redondo Beach Visitors Bureau was attempting to recruit David Hasselhoff of “Baywatch” fame as a spokesman for a city video. So she dialed information for the William Morris Agency. Imagine her surprise when she called the number only to be laughingly told: “We’ve got no talent here.” She was informed that she had been given the number for William Morris Carpet Cleaning.

miscelLAny:

An eatery called Kiosk at Nicola in the Sanwa Bank Building on Figueroa Street offers what it calls “high quality rapid cuisine.” In other words, it’s a competitor of McDonald’s.
