Nolan Ryan pitched in a simulated game situation Wednesday on the mound at Fenway Park in Boston before the Texas Rangers’ game with the Red Sox and hoped to come off the disabled list and pitch in a real game next week. The Rangers hope his pulled rib muscle will have healed in time for him to pitch next Tuesday against the New York Yankees. . . . Red Sox pitcher Jose Melendez is expected to miss the rest of the season with an inflamed nerve in his neck. Melendez, obtained in an offseason trade with San Diego for outfielder Phil Plantier, has spent most of the season on the disabled list. . . . Shawon Dunston returned to the Chicago Cubs’ active roster for the first time in more than a year. Dunston, an All-Star shortstop in 1988 and 1990, has been out since early in the 1992 season because of a herniated disc. . . . The Minnesota Twins claimed right-hander Greg Brummett off waivers to complete last week’s trade that sent Jim Deshaies to San Francisco.
