Pasadena : College Library to Open
Pasadena City College’s $16.5-million Shatford Library will open Tuesday, college officials say.
The three-story library echoes the Art Deco motif of the college’s other buildings and emphasizes light with its two-story windows, white walls and white shelves.
The nearly 60,000-square-foot structure will be twice the size of the college’s old library--which will become a student services center after remodeling--and will house 113,000 books and 60,000 periodicals, with shelf space for 50,000 more books.
The library is named after Walter T. Shatford II, a Temple City attorney who has served on the college’s Board of Trustees for 35 years.
The library was financed with state grants and $1.5 million in private donations, including $345,000 from staff and faculty, officials said.
The library has 50 computers, an instructional television studio and a KPCC-FM radio studio. It will be equipped to receive the most up-to-date electronic database systems, officials said.
High school students and residents of the Pasadena Area Community College District who have photograph identification can check out books or use services, officials said.
