Eco-Home for Western Star

Actor DENNIS WEAVER and his wife, GERRY, have put their Malibu home on the market and are moving to an environmentally sensitive house that they built in Colorado.

“It was a hard decision for them to make (to relocate), but it’s difficult to maintain two houses,” said Alice Billings, the Weavers’ spokesperson. “They might get a condo to stay in when he is here to work.”

The Emmy-winning actor, who is now in his 11th year as spokesman for Great Western Bank, played Chester in “Gunsmoke” (1955-’64) and deputy marshal Sam McCloud in “McCloud” (1970-’76). Weaver also starred in the TV movie “The Return of Sam McCloud” (1989) and co-starred in “Mastergate” (1992), a Showtime satire about the Iran-Contra hearings.

The Weavers, who have been married almost 50 years and have three grown sons and three grandchildren, have listed their Malibu home of 10 years at $2.75 million with Kerry O’Brien and Heather Beck of Jim Rapf & Associates, Malibu.

The contemporary residence, built in 1957 and remodeled in 1985, has four bedrooms, maid’s quarters, an exercise room and a guest house or office in about 3,200 square feet. The home also has a spa, decks, patios and 50 feet of beach.

The Weavers’ Colorado home, on 22 acres near Telluride, is nearly 10,000 square feet in size. The solar-powered house, which was built from recycled tires and cans and has three-foot-thick walls, has no heating or air conditioning but maintains a 65-to 75-degree temperature year-round.

“He (Weaver) loves to work in the garden, and they even grow food inside . . . he has tomatoes growing up the windows that face south when it’s 20-degrees below outside,” Billings said.

Weaver, an environmental activist, is on the board of directors of ECO (Earth Communications Office), a nonprofit group dedicated to saving the planet, and he recently established the Institute of Ecolonomics (ecology and economics), which seeks funding for environmental projects.

Madonna’s manager, FREDDIE DeMANN, and his wife, CANDY, have purchased the Bel-Air home of real estate developer and America’s Cup competitor Jim Kilroy for close to $6.5 million, sources say.

In a record of sorts, Kilroy maintained his listing for seven years with Margie Oswald-Sherman and Leah Steuer, both of Prudential Rodeo Realty. The DeManns were represented by Joe Coons, of the same realty firm.

The original asking price was $15 million; the most recent was $7.9 million.

The four-level, nearly 10,000-square-foot house is basically a one-bedroom home but is on one of Bel-Air’s most desirable sites with a spectacular view from downtown L.A. to Catalina.

The contemporary-style home was totally refurbished about eight years ago, with an elevator and a $500,000, suspended tennis court added to the 2.7-acre property, along with $3 million in landscaping, sources say.

DeMann, who sold his Beverly Hills house for nearly $4 million in May, is said to be planning to build a new second story and a master suite on top.

Kilroy has a penthouse on the Wilshire Corridor and a home in Rome, Italy. DeMann, a partner in Madonna’s production company known as Maverick Television, and his wife also have a home in Malibu.

MARK PEEL and NANCY SILVERTON, chef-owners of the celebrity-frequented restaurant Campanile and its adjacent La Brea Bakery, have become first-time home buyers with their purchase of a Hancock Park house for $500,000.

The Craftsman-style house, built in 1919 in the Windsor Square area of Hancock Park, has four bedrooms, two baths, maids quarters, a remodeled kitchen and a large yard.

“They’ve been saving their money and putting it into their business,” said Dan Sager, who represented the couple with Sandy Kinnaird, both of Coldwell Banker, Hancock Park.

The restaurateurs and their two children had been living above their Los Angeles restaurant and bakery, which they opened in 1989.

Campanile is in the courtyard of the castle-like studio that Charlie Chaplin built and then gave, through divorce, to his child bride Lita Grey. Silverton’s father, Larry, a construction lawyer, bought the building to house the restaurant, which has had, among its investors, Henry Winkler and Dustin Hoffman.

JOSHUA BRAND, creator/producer of the CBS weekly drama “Northern Exposure,” and his wife, BROOKS, have purchased a Santa Monica home for about $2 million, sources say.

Built in 1990, the house has four bedrooms in slightly more than 6,000 square feet.
