The Dodgers might have to rethink how they will pitch to Gary Sheffield and Jeff Conine next season.

Walt Weiss’ sacrifice fly broke an eighth-inning tie Sunday as the Florida Marlins rallied to beat the Dodgers, 4-3. But it was Sheffield and Conine who did a lot of damage.

Sheffield, traded from San Diego during the season, had three hits and scored twice, and Conine had two hits and scored two runs. Sheffield and Conine are a combined 34 for 66 (.515) against Dodger pitching this season.

“Both are good hitters,” Dodger Manager Tom Lasorda said. “Both are very patient and selective hitters and that makes the difference.”

Dave Hansen’s pinch-hit, two-run home run in the top of the eighth gave the Dodgers a 3-2 lead before the Marlins rallied in the bottom of the inning.

After Hansen hit for Kevin Gross (two runs and nine hits in seven innings), Roger McDowell was brought in to protect the lead.

Conine walked to lead off the eighth and Sheffield singled him to second. Matias Carrillo, making his second major league start, singled home Conine to tie the score.

Todd Worrell relieved McDowell and got Benito Santiago to pop out. After a walk to Orestes Destrade loaded the bases, Weiss hit his sacrifice fly to right.

“I’ve really hit them well this year,” Conine said. “It’s something I don’t understand. In the minors it was the Astros’ pitchers. They had good stuff, but I wore them out.”

The rally made a winner of reliever Matt Turner (4-4), and Bryan Harvey struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth for his 40th save in 43 opportunities. McDowell (4-3) took the loss.
