The Region : Crossing Guard Funding
County supervisors on Tuesday will discuss whether to restore funding for school crossing guards in unincorporated areas.
Supervisors cut $1.7 million in funding for more than 150 crossing guards from the budget in July. School districts in unincorporated county areas, such as Rowland Unified in the San Gabriel Valley, were left to pay for the guards or use staff members or parents.
Last month, Supervisor Michael Antonovich asked county staff to find a way to come up with part of the funding for the program. However, county administrative office officials said no money was available.
On an interim basis, some school districts have begun paying for the crossing guards, while others are using staff members to ensure the safety of children crossing busy streets.
Antonovich’s senior deputy, Ollie Blanning, said the supervisor’s staff is conducting its own search for county funds to pay for some of the cost of crossing guards.
