It took Brigham Young’s John Walsh only 19 seconds to turn 65,771 booing fans into his best friends.

The sophomore quarterback, who had received the crowd’s wrath by repeatedly overthrowing receivers, earned cheers with a 58-yard pass play to Eric Drage with 37 seconds left.

The play set up Joe Herrick’s 40-yard field goal with 18 seconds remaining, giving No. 20 BYU a 41-38 Western Athletic Conference victory over Hawaii at Provo, Utah.

Hawaii (1-1 overall, 0-1 in the WAC) lost its chance to take the lead when a 21-yard field-goal attempt by Carlton Oswalt bounced off the left upright with 41 seconds left.

“We didn’t put the ball in the end zone when we had the chance,” Hawaii Coach Bob Wagner said. “We shouldn’t have been in that position.”

Walsh completed 18 of 36 passes with two touchdowns for BYU (2-0 overall and in the WAC).

Flanker Aaron Bailey scored three touchdowns to lead Louisville (2-0) to a 54-28 victory over Memphis State (1-1) at Memphis, Tenn.
