Followup : Crime Makes Freedom ‘a Cruel Joke’

I find Daniel Tsang’s views in “Is ‘Innocent Until Proven Guilty’ a Lost Principle?” (Voices, Aug. 30) disturbing and naive. Tsang talks about civil liberties freedoms for his night-clubbers. He does not realize that freedom in Southern California is a cruel joke. Women are advised to walk in twos. Drivers always take a quick glance at the floor in the backs of their minivans. We only sleep well when we have bars across our windows, or one of those intricate alarms.

With all this, Tsang rushes to the defense of fashion? And freedom of gang association? He writes indignantly, “Since when has gang membership or association become a crime?” It becomes a crime when the safety of Fountain Valley’s citizens is threatened and when hundreds of thousands of dollars are forked over to repaint defaced buildings and billboards.

Please, Mr. Tsang, work with the police when they try to protect you. Don’t tie their hands behind their backs. If they feel they require the aid of photographs and descriptions of Asian gang-wear, fine. You must not jump so hastily to the conclusion that you are being racially discriminated against.
