HOME ALONE: School started three weeks ago at Cal State Fullerton and it’s another two weeks before UC Irvine opens for the fall. And, as always, there’s a scramble for student housing. . . . At UC Irvine, some students will find new places to call their own. Thirty-five newly completed residential buildings on the east side of campus are home to fraternities, sororities and members of certain academic organizations such as honors clubs and ethnic studies groups. Groups of up to 32 students can live in the houses, whose rents range from $4,900 and $9,900. . . . Says Jim Craig, director of housing: “We’ve got a very nice project that will house a very diverse community during the coming year and future years at UCI.”
PRIME-TIME CLASSES: Starting tonight, some Coastline Community College students can wax philosophic with their instructor without attending class. . . . The college offers its first live telecourse, Philosophy 115, on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Afterward, students subscribing to certain cable companies can call, fax or send E-mail questions or comments to the instructor. Says Peter Vander Haeghen, who designed the course: “Students will get a classroom-type experience while sitting at home.”
FRIS-ED: At Chapman University, they know how to give a spin to their Movement and Exercise Science--elsewhere known as physical education--program. Students earn half a unit in MES 129--Frisbee while learning various flick-of-the-wrist throws and games. Says Penny Brush, who chairs the MES department: “While the class is fun, the games played can really be physical and exhausting.”
SPRUCE CENTER: Orange Coast College will reopen its $2.5- million renovated Student Center on Sept. 22. Officials closed the 15,000-square-foot facility--built in 1952 for $300,000--in July, 1992, to give the building a modern look. The building “has been the campus’ heart for 40 years,” said Sharon K. Donoff, Orange Coast vice president of student services. “People are going to notice dramatic changes.”
