Caterpillar Inc. Computers Dig Up Tax Refund: The company said it scored the $350-million refund using a computer program that crunches export sales tax numbers better than ever before. The software, developed in-house, makes previously impossible complex calculations to figure the tax incentives permitted on each export transaction, said Richard Stober, spokesman for the heavy equipment maker. The number-crunching program works among the fine points of a complicated set of rules granting tax breaks to businesses to encourage exports. Caterpillar, based in Peoria, Ill., was the 13th-largest U.S. exporter last year.
