Oxnard Lemon to Pay $575,000 to Settle Lawsuit

Share

The Oxnard Lemon Co. last week agreed to pay $575,000 to settle a 1991 lawsuit that accused the packinghouse of discriminatory hiring and employment practices against women.

The packinghouse also agreed to maintain non-discriminatory hiring and promotion policies, and to reserve some jobs traditionally held by men. The settlement came after a U.S. District Court judge in June ruled on part of the lawsuit, saying that the company was guilty of discriminating against women in hiring.

An attorney for Oxnard Lemon said the company settled to avoid costly litigation. The lawsuit was filed by California Rural Legal Assistance on behalf of more than 100 women who worked or sought work at the packinghouse.
