Boundaries were expanded Monday for an Orange County quarantine zone in which the movement of fruits and vegetables will be restricted in an effort to eradicate the Medfly, officials announced.

Officials from the Cooperative Medfly Project said that because of a Medfly infestation in Santa Ana, 48 square miles will be added to an already established quarantine in the Westminster area.

The newly expanded region will include all of Santa Ana, Tustin and portions of Orange and Irvine. The revision of the boundaries means that a total of about 113 square miles will be affected.

Under the rules of the quarantine, fruits and vegetables may not be moved within or out of the area. Residents of the area also may not move fresh fruit or vegetables off their property. To do so could spread the Medfly infestation to other areas.

If back-yard gardeners have more produce than they can consume, it must be processed in some way, such as cooked, frozen, canned, pureed or baked, before it can be given away to friends or neighbors, officials said. Any excess fruit should be double-bagged in plastic trash bags, tied at the top, and placed at curbside for regular trash collection.

Boundaries of the new quarantine area are generally Chapman Avenue on the north, Foothill Boulevard, Jamboree Road and Culver Drive on the east, the San Diego Freeway on the south. The area meets the Westminster quarantine area along Fairview Road.

Residents who have any questions regarding the quarantine should contact the Medfly Project at (800) 491-1899.
