SOUTH-CENTRAL : Doctor Pleads Not Guilty in Scheme to Bilk Patients

Share

A South-Central Los Angeles physician and a property manager pleaded not guilty Monday to charges that they bilked the doctor’s mostly elderly patients out of more than $320,000 with false promises that the money would be used to build a retirement center.

Dr. Joseph Tyrone Alfred, 63, and the property manager, Lois Marie Anderson, 46, were held in lieu of $50,000 and $10,000 bails, respectively. Their lawyers insisted that Alfred merely had defaulted on loans in a business venture and that the two should be released.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Stephen Mazur argued that Alfred, who has operated a medical practice on South Figueroa Street since 1963, had criminal intent when he solicited the loans. Anderson is accused of helping Alfred’s patients obtain second mortgages by filling out false income tax returns.
