The state Office of Child Abuse Prevention has awarded $300,000 to a charity that will oversee child abuse programs for area around Franklin Elementary School.
“The whole concept is community empowerment, borrowing from the saying that it takes a whole village to raise a child,” said Robert Ketch, executive director of Five Acres--The Boys’ and Girls’ Aid Society of Los Angeles County in Altadena.
Charity officials say the grant will be used to hire a full-time social worker who will establish a family support center and a 24-hour hot line for families in emergency need of food and shelter.
Half a dozen neighborhood groups, the city, churches and parents are participating in the grass-roots effort to help children.
