Long Beach : Council Wants to Downsize Proposed Homeless Shelter
The City Council refused Tuesday to endorse a compromise plan calling for a 200-apartment homeless shelter to be established on land in West Long Beach that the Navy will soon vacate.
The council majority, fearing the project could draw crime and other problems, called for renewed negotiations to reduce the size of the shelter proposed by the nonprofit Christian Outreach Appeal.
The compromise called for Christian Outreach Appeal to receive 24 acres and 200 apartments of the 135-acre Savannah and Cabrillo naval housing projects.
The remaining land would be used by the Long Beach Unified School District, Cal State Long Beach and the U.S. Department of Labor for new schools, a research park and a job training program.
The council’s action carries weight but is only a recommendation. The Navy will decide who gets the surplus property once it vacates it next year.
