Notes about your surroundings San Juan Creek Trip--South Coast Audubon, a chapter of the National Audubon Society, is holding a field trip to San Juan Creek on Saturday. The trip will be in conjunction with cleanup and plant-removal activities being done as part of the group’s San Juan Creek habitat enhancement project.

The field trip will be led by Daniel Manrique. The area is a willow riparian habitat, and a wide variety of resident birds will be seen, as well as a few early migrants.

The habitat enhancement project begins at 8 a.m. and the field trip begins at 9 a.m.

The site for the trip and project is on Calle Arroyo in San Juan Capistrano, near the Capistrano Valley Water District’s water tank.

To reach the site, take Interstate 5 to the Ortega Highway off-ramp and go east. Turn right on La Novia Avenue, then left at Calle Arroyo. It’s about half a mile up, between Paseo Esteban and Calle del Campo. Park on Calle Arroyo or the surrounding streets.

Coastal Cleanup--Oct. 2 is Coastal Cleanup Day, to be observed locally at Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve and the Bolsa Chica wetlands.

Work will begin at 9 a.m. and end about noon.

Volunteers are asked to wear old clothes and bring work gloves; trash bags will be provided.

Those who want to volunteer at Upper Newport Bay are asked to meet at the Newport Dunes parking area. Those who want to volunteer at Bolsa Chica should meet at the ecological reserve’s parking lots on Pacific Coast Highway or Warner Avenue.
